Sue Buffum’s decision to attend Brown was based partly on its location—it was nearby—and it was co-ed, but what she wanted most was a place that would challenge her. Brown didn’t just challenge her, it offered a whole new world in which Sue thrived. And she never stopped thriving. After Brown, Sue earned an MBA and had a successful career at MetLife. Sue credits Brown with giving her the confidence to start MetLife’s municipal bond program, which she grew to more than $15 billion.
In 2016 Sue established a charitable remainder trust. The trust supplements her retirement income now and will ultimately augment her existing Brown scholarship fund. Financial aid is a particular priority for Sue because, “a Brown education should be accessible to everyone who is admitted.”
For others who are considering giving back, Sue suggests, “Come back to campus and be wowed. Then join me in being a grateful donor.”
