As part of a pilot program for fiscal years 2022–2024, planned gifts with a Brown Annual Fund designation or to a Brown Annual Fund endowment will be included in Class Gift to the Brown Annual Fund for individuals including and after the 20th Reunion.

  • Brown Medical Annual Fund
  • School of Engineering Annual Fund
  • School of Public Health Annual Fund

  • BUSF Athletics Annual Funds

WHAT TYPES OF GIFTS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS PILOT PROGRAM?

Estate provisions, retirement plan beneficiary designations, and life income gifts, such as a charitable remainder trust or a charitable gift annuity.

Revocable Bequest Intentions:

Credit Age Required Documentation to Receive Credit
100% 55+
  1. Language from the will, trust, or a copy of a beneficiary designation form
  2. Signed bequest intention pledge form
90% 50-54
80% 40-49

DISCOUNTED BEQUESTS:

Donors are eligible to receive increased credit for previously discounted bequests if they increase their estate provision for Brown.

IRREVOCABLE PLANNED GIFTS:

100% of the face value allocated for Brown.

TESTAMENTARY LIFE INCOME GIFTS:

The appropriate credit is calculated first on the estimated amount designated for Brown and then limited to the charitable deduction calculated on the future beneficiaries’ life expectancies and the payout rate associated with the particular gift vehicle.

HOW AMOUNTS ARE CALCULATED:

For estate provisions and retirement plan beneficiary designations, we rely on the donor’s estimate of what Brown is likely to receive in the future. For life income gifts, we recognize the full fair market value of the amount used to establish the gift.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Joint Gifts

If a husband and wife are making a single testamentary gift to Brown that will take effect only after both of them have died, gift credit is based on the younger spouse’s age.

Irrevocable Life Income Gifts with a Revocable Designation of Brown Donors will be granted the same credit as for revocable bequest intentions.
